THE TALK: SEX ED 2.0 FOR PARENTS

The notion that a single sex talk at home or a handful of classes in school are enough to guide kids toward healthy choices and sexual empowerment is absurd. But this leaves many parents floundering. While we may want to encourage conversations with our children about bodies, babies, gender, boundaries, consent, identity, and beyond, we aren’t always sure what to say, how to say it, or when to begin. When is the “right time” to start talking? How young is too young? What, exactly, should we be talking about at various ages? And how do we begin to tackle the unique challenges confronting kids today?

In this talk for parents, sexuality educator Rachel Lotus will discuss all of this and more. Attendees will leave equipped with actionable steps, practical help with language, and developmentally appropriate resources.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

★ Early and often: start talking, keep talking.

★ How and when to talk about difficult, oft-avoided topics (e.g., babies; bodies; puberty; early/accidental intro to explicit content/porn; and more).

★ Reflections on our own sex ed histories. Which belief systems do we hope to pass on to our children? Which would we rather leave behind?

★ Points of entry: learn to start conversations proactively instead of waiting passively for questions.

★ Resources for parents and kids of all ages and stages.

*This talk is best suited for parents/caregivers of elementary-aged kids.
