PSP Sibling Preparation Class with NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital @ 10:30am

Park Slope Parents and NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital’s Child Life Team invite you and your child to our Virtual Sibling Preparation Class!

This fun and interactive 30-minute Sibling Preparation Class has been designed for children (3-8 years of age) who are about to have a new baby in the family and will soon be taking on the role of Big Brother or Big Sister.

Children will have an opportunity to learn about their new role and each child will receive a certificate of class completion.

Susan Franks, Senior Child Life Specialist,  will offer an age-appropriate description of pregnancy, explore feelings about becoming a big brother or sister, and show a video of the maternity unit. Suggestions and resources for answering questions about new babies and tips for managing sibling rivalry will be offered. Parent(s) or guardian(s) must be on the Zoom with child(ren).

This class is best taken during the last four to six weeks of a mother’s pregnancy.

Things we will cover:

  • Where will the baby be born?
  • What happens to me when mom goes to the hospital?
  • What will my new sibling look like?
  • Why do babies cry all the time?
  • How do I hold and touch a new baby?
  • Information about hand washing and nose wiping!
  • Feelings about the new baby and changes to the household.
  • When mom and dad are busy with the baby – what about me??
  • How new big sibs can help mom, dad and the new baby.

Why attend?
Studies have shown that children who have participated in a sibling preparation class exhibit fewer anxieties, are better able to express their feelings, and parents feels better able to cope with the older child when the infant arrives.

Cost $20.00 per family (with $15.00 going to Little Essentials).

Space is limited to 12 PSP Member Families.
