A Timeline for the Road to College: From Ninth Grade to Senior Year of High School

This workshop will provide an overview of high school as preparation for applying to college. You will come away with a plan for the many moving parts that make up a successful college process, including a framework, a timeline handout, and a renewed sense of control. Most importantly, you will get a strong understanding of what really matters on the road to college...and what is just noise!

This event is most useful for parents of students in 8th - 11th grades but parents with younger children are welcome to attend.

Questions that will be answered:

  • Are grades equally important all four years?
  • What happens if the transition to high school was rocky?
  • How do colleges compare students from different schools, some with lots of AP's and some with few?
  • How important is the SAT/ACT? What about Subject Tests?
  • When should students take these tests and how many times?
  • How about college visits? How important are they and do we need to visit before applying or wait until after acceptance?

In addition, information about college applications and essays will be shared:

  • Timeframes for Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, and Rolling Decision  - what's the difference?
  • How do I make a list of colleges we can actually afford?
  • When are financial aid applications due and when will I find out how much it's all going to cost?
  • The additional drama and audition schedule for actors, musicians, artists -- and the extra track and timeline for sports recruits.

Rachel Coates of Educoates College Services will answer all these questions and many others you may have. Rachel has been guiding high school students and their parents through the college admission maze since 2007. Her main office is in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, with an outpost in the Hudson Valley. She visits close to 100 colleges a year, and speaks frequently at professional conferences and parent association meetings.
