How to make your college application stand out: insights from former admissions officers
Wondering what happens to your child's application after they hit submit? Curious why one student gets in and another with the same grades doesn't? Join us for How to Make Your College Application Stand Out: Insights from Former Admissions Officers.
Speakers Meghan Stetson and Chris Briggs from Great Expectations have been the people sitting on the other side of the desk making decisions, and are going to walk you through how some students got in and others did not. There will be plenty of time for Q&A. We will discuss:
-
How an admissions officer reads an application and what they’re focused on
-
Which parts of the application a student can still change and which have the most impact
-
What makes an essay memorable and the topics readers have seen a thousand times
-
When to start, what to focus on each year of high school, and the mistakes families make most often
-
How to build a course load and activity list around what your child cares about rather than what they think an admissions officer may want to see
This webinar will be useful for any high school student. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders will learn what's important for each year of high school, and seniors will get an insider's view of how college admissions officers think as they're completing their applications.
This webinar will be recorded. If you can't make it but want to receive the video link, you must register.
You'll receive your webinar link the day before or the day of the webinar.
About the speakers

Chris Briggs is an admissions strategist and educational leader with over 15 years of experience shaping diverse, globally minded student bodies across highly selective research universities and elite independent schools. With a professional trajectory that includes key admissions positions at Duke University and Georgia Tech, alongside his current role as a Dean of College Counseling at Durham Academy, Christopher possesses an intimate, comprehensive understanding of how selective admissions decisions are made.

Meghan Stetson is a former Harvard Admissions & Financial Aid officer turned psychotherapist with nearly two decades in higher education. She grew up on college campuses as the daughter of a football coach and college administrator. After graduating from Williams College as a varsity basketball player, she promptly took up the family business, working at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Oxford University, and Hamilton College as a teacher, advisor, sports writer, and coach. A college counseling role brought her to Boston, where she soon landed on the other side of the desk at Harvard. Meghan’s approach to advising recognizes the college application process as a rite of passage and a teen’s first serious invitation toward self-knowledge.
