About The Anxious Generation

THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER •

“Erudite, engaging, combative, crusading.” —New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

The mental health of adolescents plummeted in the early 2010s, with sharply rising rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide. In The Anxious Generation, Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt investigates the reasons for these troubling trends. He argues that the decline of play-based childhood, replaced by phone-based childhood, has interfered with children's social and neurological development. He explains how social media damages girls more than boys, and why boys are withdrawing into the virtual world. Haidt calls for collective action to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

Our discussion will revolve around:

  • How can we as parents face the challenges posed by our kids "phone-based childhood"?

  • Are there ways we can help our kids be less reliant on our phones?

  • What are the the positive aspects of technology and how can we not demonize it to the point that our kids reject our POV?

  • How can we let go of OUR need to be connected?

  • What are the potential long-term consequences of the decline in play-based childhood for society as a whole?

  • How can we balance the benefits of technology with the need to protect young people's mental well-being?

From Mandi:

“I'm late to the Anxious Generation conversation, but it has rocked my world. I think it is maybe the most important book about parenting and mental health in a long time, and I've become a huge proselytizer…Haidt lays out the entire landscape (lack of real-world experiences + too much––and too unregulated––virtual experience) so succinctly that it's so clear to me that we as a society need to band together to fix it…he does a good job of connecting the dots among historical trends and really drawing the picture of how this came about, without blaming anyone. But don’t despair! There’s a very robust part at the end that talks about what we can actually do to improve things.”

The discussion will be hosted by a PSP member. The address will be in your confirmation email.
