Insight into Adolescence with Dr. Michael Davidovits
Adolescence is a time of transition for both children and their parents. Kids seek independence, parents are left wondering about how to adjust limits in a way that is both supportive and appropriate. Both kids and parents are worrying about the changes still to come.
Join PSP for a night of insight with Dr. Michael Davidovits, expert in child and adolescent psychology.
Our goals? Gaining an understanding of the cognitive, emotional and physical changes in early adolescence and adolescence. Exploring strategies to help us stay connected while getting more comfortable with our child's greater need for independence. Learning to manage our stress over our stressed-out teens!
Among the questions we will consider are:
• What are appropriate and realistic expectations and limits for a parent to set and how do I set them?
• How do I deal with my child’s provocations and anxiety-provoking experimentation?
• How do I regulate access to social media and the Internet?
• What kind of involvement should I have in my child’s schoolwork?
• How do I stay connected to my child even as my child pulls away?
About Michael Davidovits, PhD, LCSW
Michael Davidovits, PhD, LCSW, is a teaching faculty member and Assistant Director of the Project for Adolescents and their Families at the Ackerman Institute. He is also a lecturer in the Narrative Medicine Program at Columbia University, and a clinical supervisor in the Family Medicine Residency Program at the Columbia University School of Medicine. Dr. Davidovits offers frequent trainings throughout the metropolitan area on conducting family therapy with adolescents, and maintains a private practice in Manhattan.

I would highly recommend this workshop to other parents. The one takeaway, which I lost sight of, is to get my kids to participate in the rule making - parents make the menu with items that we are comfortable with and allow the kids to choose. I love that analogy.

It really hit home that unlike the little kids years, you can't make your tween and teen do something. It's all about maintaining a good relationship with them. It continues to be important to set clear expectations.

I highly recommend this informative, detailed and calm workshop that provides some excellent hands-on tools and ideas for helping tween/teen parents to better understand and navigate the amazing (terrifying, beautiful, intense, complicated) wild ride of adolescence. Dr. Davidovits gives you food for thought for years to come. I have attended two of his lectures - one at NYU and one hosted by PSP. I often consult my notes from these workshops - especially to remember some of the smart responses and conversation openers – when I need to have a conversation with my teen.

I feel like this would be even MORE useful for me now that my son is in middle school. I’ve noticed a big difference in him (and his friendships, schoolwork, etc.) from when he was 10 yrs. in 5th grade and now, 11 yrs. in 6th grade -- it’s a whole new ballgame! I can recommend this workshop! I went with my husband and I think he found it particularly valuable as he doesn't read a lot of books/articles about parenting.
