A Conversation For Families About Premature Birth: 5/12 @ 8:00pm

Premature birth happens to one in ten babies and their families. What does this phenomenon, this public health crisis, mean for everyone involved?

Please join PSP and Sarah DiGregorio, the author of EARLY, An Intimate History of Premature Birth and What It Teaches Us About Being Human, for a conversation for parents, caretakers and loved ones of babies and children born prematurely.

This event is for anyone who works with families with premature children or deals with prematurity in any way in their practice.

Sarah DiGregorio will speak about her personal experience - she was born prematurely and her daughter was born prematurely - and the questions that inspired her to write a book about prematurity. She will discuss the NICU journey and what life after the NICU looks like for babies and their families. Sarah will share some of the most compelling stories from her reporting on premature birth as well as discuss some of the big-picture public health issues that lead to a high premature birth rate in the United States.

Sarah will be joined by Courtney Ebner, owner of Norman & Jules toy store and parent of a daughter born prematurely in 2010.

Sarah and Courtney will discuss these and other topics before opening the conversation up to the group:
  • Being a parent in the NICU
  • Understanding medical jargon
  • The transition home
  • Mental health challenges for families
  • Feeding issues
  • Navigating hope and news
  • Managing health and developmental issues
  • Understanding and navigating Early Intervention, Specialist Appointments, and the IEP Process

"A must read for anyone interested in the science—or the experience—of preterm birth." — Emily Oster, author of the New York Times bestseller Cribsheet and Expecting Better

"The heart of DiGregorio’s illuminating book isn’t just about her family’s journey; it’s an expansive examination of the history and

ethics of neonatology." — New York Times Book Review
